How replacing a damaged concrete walkway changed the entire feel of this Delaware home

The walkway leading to a home’s front door does something that no other exterior feature can quite replicate: it’s the path every visitor physically experiences. When it’s beautiful and safe, it welcomes. When it’s cracked, uneven, and stained, it sets a tone that no landscaping can fully overcome. The Before: A Path Nobody Wanted to Walk

The original walkway was more than 25 years old and showed every year of it. Three sections had heaved enough to create visible lips at the joints — a tripping hazard that the homeowner had warned guests about for two seasons. The surface showed widespread spalling. Staining from years of organic debris had darkened the concrete irregularly. The steps at the door had separated from the porch slab and collected water in the gap.

Full removal of all existing walkway sections and steps. Sub-grade assessment — we found the original installation had minimal gravel base, a primary cause of the settling and heaving. New compacted base installed to proper depth. New 4-inch walkway slab poured with rebar, properly sloped away from the house for drainage. Steps rebuilt to code-compliant riser and tread dimensions, integrated with the existing porch slab. Finish: broom-field with exposed aggregate border.
