How a custom French drain system solved a five-year drainage nightmare for a homeowner in New Jersey

Five years. That’s how long this New Jersey homeowner had been dealing with a backyard that became essentially unusable after any significant rain event. A large low area in the rear yard collected water from two neighbor properties and held it for days. The lawn was dying in patches. The kids couldn’t play outside. A 95-foot perimeter French drain system intercepting subsurface flow from the property line. Extended downspout connections routed to the main drain line. A single discharge outlet at the front property edge connecting to the municipal storm system. The entire installation was completed in two days, with lawn restoration (topsoil and seed over disturbed areas) included.

The Result: One Month and Four Rain Events Later

At the one-month follow-up, the homeowner reported that the yard was dry within a few hours of the most significant rain event since installation — a 2.5-inch storm that would previously have left standing water for three or four days.
